Future Fund alternatives head denies departure

Future Fund alternatives head denies rumours he will set up a local office for Ares.

Future Fund investment director fixed interest and alternatives Mitchell Stack has denied he will leave the fund to set up a local office for a US-based alternatives manager.

"No, that is not the case at all. I've been here for a bunch of years and it is going well," Stack said.

Stack joined the Future Fund in 2008 from Western Asset Management, where he was head of investments and country head for Australia.

Rumours circulated last week that Stack had been confirmed as country head of Australia for Los Angeles-headquartered alternatives firm Ares Management, after an industry wide search.

Ares Management is one of 11 investment managers used by Future Fund to run its debt securities mandates.

Ares is a private equity investment firm focused on managing debt and equity securities with about US$39 billion in assets under management and advice.

The firm operates through three groups ARES Capital Management, Ares Capital Markets Group and Ares Private Equity Group, and has offices throughout the United States, Europe and Asia.

Ares did not return calls from Investor Weekly.

Future Fund announced last month that it had appointed Treasury Group managing director Mark Burgess as its new general manager, following the departure of Paul Costello.
