Lazard has reeled in former finance minister Tanner to help the firm develop the corporate bond market.

Financial advisory and asset management firm Lazard has appointed former finance and deregulation minister Lindsay Tanner as a special adviser to its Australian branch.

Tanner has been given instructions to help the firm develop the corporate bond market in Australia and improve public private partnership tendering processes.

He will also be involved in the general business development of Lazard's local branch.

"I hold the highest level of respect for Lazard and am attracted by the calibre of its people, its global scope and its independence," Tanner said.

Tanner was finance minister from 2007 to 2010, but announced his resignation on the day Kevin Rudd was ousted as prime minister.

"Lindsay has had a distinguished career in Australian public life and has won wide respect across the political spectrum for his abilities and policy work," Lazard Australia head of corporate advisory John Wylie said.

"We are delighted he will be a special adviser to Lazard," Wylie said.

Tanner is not the only former Labor politician on Lazard's payroll.

Former prime minister Paul Keating currently serves as chairman of the firm's international corporate advisory team in Sydney.

Lazard continues to expand in Australia and opened a new office in Perth earlier this year.
