APRA's Trowbridge makes way for AMP stalwart Ian Laughlin.

The Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) has named Ian Laughlin as the successor of executive member John Trowbridge, who will step down on 30 June.

Laughlin, a qualified actuary, is currently AMP Life board audit committee chairman, and has also served as managing director of AMP Financial Services' United Kingdom subsidiaries.

Before joining AMP in 1996, he held senior management positions with Suncorp and National Mutual (now Axa Asia Pacific).

"The appointment of Laughlin is highly regarded in the financial services industry and ensures that the APRA executive continues to have significant insurance expertise with the departure of John Trowbridge," Minister for financial services, superannuation and corporate law Chris Bowen said yesterday.

Laughlin has been appointed for a period of three years starting on 1 July 2010.

Trowbridge leaves after serving four years with the regulator.

He has strengthened APRA's standing with the insurance industry and guided enhancements to the general and life insurance prudential frameworks, the regulator said.

He also led the development of APRA's prudential standards on executive remuneration in regulated institutions.

As of 1 July 2010, the APRA executive group will consist of three members: chairman John Laker, deputy chairman Ross Jones and executive member Ian Laughlin.
