Superannuation research house Chant West issues its latest ratings, with some new and familiar faces making appearances.

Health Super and LUCRF Super made their first appearance in the pension and personal super sections of the Chant West 2010 funds ratings for multi-manager investment options.

Both superannuation funds received five "apples" for their respective products.

The Chant West overall rating sums up its view on the merits of funds relative to industry best practice, with five apples being the highest and one apple being the lowest.

The OAMPS Super Fund also made its first appearance in the personal super and pension categories.

"They're new and they've got four apples because they've been doing a lot to improve their product over the past year, particularly with administration, communications, administration and investment," Chant West research manager Ian Fryer said.

Russell Investment's Corporate and Personal SuperSolution Master Trusts received five apples.

The Russell Private Action Pension received five apples, which it has received every year since inception.

Fryer said Russell excelled in the area of member statements.

"Russell have really set the benchmark on statements - others are starting to follow suit, but most haven't really moved too much," Fryer said.Quality of member education and financial planning figured large in the latest Chant West fund ratings, according to Fryer. "A number of funds are doing excellent things in the way of educating their members and providing fairly sophisticated services in education and financial planning," he said.

Sunsuper's On Track program was singled out for praise by Fryer, as was NGS Super's education program entitled NGS College.

"There is a lot to still be done in this area, but there are good things happening," Fryer said.

The ratings are based on six criteria - organisational strengths, investment fees, insurance, administration and member services.

Separate ratings are produced for personal funds, corporate funds and pension funds.
