Australia’s largest super fund for the legal community, legalsuper, has appointed a new chief investment officer.

Edward Smith has been appointed in the role and will commence on 29 June 2015.

Mr Smith will be responsible for overseeing legalsuper’s investment arrangements and advising the investment committee and board on investment strategy.

Andrew Proebstl, legalsuper chief executive, said the appointment will increase the fund’s internal investment expertise and ability to access investment opportunities.

“The CIO appointment will significantly add to the existing investment expertise directly accessible to the investment committee and board from its two existing investment experts – David St John and Neville Hathaway,” Mr Proebstl said.

Prior to joining legalsuper, Mr Smith held positions with Australian Unity, Frontier Investment Consulting, Victorian Funds Management Corporation, Trust Investment Management and Frank Russell Company.
