Newly created Challenger-aligned boutique infrastructure firm Whitehelm Capital has appointed Gary Withers as chief executive.

Whitehelm Capital was created after Challenger and Access Capital Advisers made the decision to merge their infrastructure operations into one business, as reported by InvestorDaily in April.

Mr Withers will take up his role as chief executive on 4 August 2014, with interim chief executive Graham Matthews resuming his responsibilities as chief investment officer.

He joins from First State Investments in the UK where he was chief executive officer.

Prior to this, Mr Withers held chief executive roles at Credit Suisse Asset Management and AVIVA Life.

Whitehelm Capital chairman Janet Torney said Mr Withers’ extensive international experience as chief executive at various global fund managers, as well as his skills and relationships, “will benefit Whitehelm’s future international opportunities and partnerships”.

Whitehelm now has 51 employees in London, Sydney, Singapore and Canberra and currently has $4 billion in funds under management as of 30 April 2014.
