Rudd switches up financial services portfolio

On the day the government’s sweeping financial services reforms come into play, responsibility for financial services has been passed on, with the role seeming to be split between two ministers.

David Bradbury, who last week was Assistant Treasurer and Minister Assisting for Deregulation, retains the role as Assistant Treasurer and is also Minister for Competition Policy and Consumer Affairs, Minister Assisting for Deregulation, and Minister Assisting for Financial Services and Superannuation.

Chris Bowen, who was promoted to Minister for Financial Services, Superannuation and Corporate Law and Minister for Human Services in 2009 prior to Bill Shorten taking over the financial services portfolio in 2010, was last week appointed to the role of Treasurer, suggesting a splitting of the duties between the ministers Bowen and Bradbury.

If Mr Bradbury assumes chief responsibility for the role, it would suggest something of a demotion for the portfolio, with Mr Bradbury sitting outside Cabinet and no single dedicated minister for the portfolio.

After overseeing the consultation phase for much of the reforms, Minister for Financial Services and Superannuation Bill Shorten has a new role as Minister for Education and Minister for Workplace Relations.
