An online and social media approach to underinsurance will connect clients to the problem, says Lifewise.

Advisers should be utilising online and social media tools to make Australians aware of the country's underinsurance problem, according to Lifewise.

"It's important to be available and be a source of information online because everybody these days is looking for information online and they're more likely to trust information that they can find for themselves," Lifewise campaign manager Holly Dorber said.

"There are definitely some advisers out there that are doing it but also the life insurance industry needs to stop talking internally with each other and start talking directly to policy holders and consumers."

Lifewise sits under the Financial Services Council and acts as its consumer awareness arm for life and income underinsurance.

"By having a conversation in a more general way with the Australian community about their lifestyle and protecting it, it's easier to connect that with what they're trying to build up and the importance of having a [policy] in place should something happen," she said.

Lifewise has added a social media element to its website.

"We're trying to have conversations with Australian families where the conversations are happening - online and through Facebook and Twitter," Dorber said.

In addition, advisers were providing responses to questions in online forums and looking for independent online resources to arm themselves with statistics, real life stories and case studies to use with their clients, she said.

The underinsurance problem can be solved as the life insurance industry is strong and competitive, Dorber said.

"You can solve underinsurance," she said.

"Consumers have access to a wider range of products probably than ever before.

"The ability to access insurance, be it through superannuation, direct or comprehensive personal advice, is increasing and that can only be a good thing for underinsurance so I definitely think we can close the underinsurance gap."

She said a long-term, sustained approach is required to begin to close the gap.

"It's only when people realise they have a need for insurance that underinsurance will [begin to improve] rather than having to go out and sell insurance, they should be coming to us for it," she added.
