AMP Capital has expanded its Australian fundamental equities team.

AMP Capital has launched a global resources fund and expanded its Australian fundamental equities team.

Demand from overseas clients has spurred the global resources fund, which will be headed by new hire John Payne.

The new Australian fundamental equities team will expand with Andy Gardner as portfolio manager/analyst and Ed Rayner as senior portfolio manager/analyst.

AMP Capital head of fundamental equities Ella Brown said Payne's appointment "introduces a new capability to AMP Capital" and the fund was in response to "increasing demand from clients in Asia and the Middle East".

Payne joined the broader fundamental equities team as a senior portfolio manager last Wednesday, and has more than 24 years' experience in funds management having run global resource strategies at Hexam Capital, Baring Asset Management, Invesco, Tiburon and Capital Elements.

All the appointments will bolster AMP Capital's new products - concentrated, income-focused and long/short strategies.

Portfolio manager/analyst Gardner is responsible for Australian resources, and joins from MF Global.

Rayner, seconded from AllianceBernstein since October last year, accepted a permanent role as senior portfolio manager/analyst, and will continue to run a core growth strategy.

He was previously at AllianceBernstein, UBS Brinson and JP Morgan Investment.

AMP Capital's Australian fundamental equities team now has 13 staff in Sydney.
