Suncorp Metway awarded MFAA operator of the year.

Luminaries of the mortgage and finance industry have been recognised in an Oscars-style awards ceremony.

Judges voted Port Macquarie's Peter Nest of Affinity Finance Brokers finance broker of the year, Michael Khoury of Mortgage One, Sydney, as up-and-coming broker of the year and Sydney's Peter Ellis of Oxygen Home Loans to be mortgage broker of the year.

"The last 12 months have been a lot of hard work training, keeping my skills sharp and learning to build our name through marketing. It's an honour to be recognised by our industry body as one of the top mortgage writers," said 24-year-old Khoury, who has been a finalist for the past three years and scooped the award in 2005.

The 2007 Mortgage and Finance Association of Australia's (MFAA) National Excellence Awards took place in Melbourne on Friday.

Winners included Mildura Finance, Smartline, Oxygen Home Loans, Tassie Home Loans, Wizard Home Loans, Perth's Australian Finance Group, Wholesale Mortgage Funding and National Brokers Group.

Suncorp Metway was crowned lender of the year and then the overall winner, taking home the mantle of MFAA Operator of Year.

"These awards play a big part in demonstrating the professionalism of our expanding industry and celebrating our quality membership, which has more than doubled since 2004 when the awards began, to over 12,000," said MFAA chief executive Phil Naylor.
