Future Fund chairman David Gonski will join the Australian Philanthropic Services board.

David Gonski, chairman on the board of the Future Fund and Investec Bank, will join the board of Australian Philanthropic Services (APS).

He joins the existing board of directors: chairman Chris Cuffe, Fiona Higgins, Jan Swinhoe, Michael Traill, David Ward, Belinda Hutchinson and Tim Fairfax.

"I am pleased to announce that respected business leader and philanthropist, David Gonski, has accepted our invitation to join the board of Australian Philanthropic Services and will do so within the next few months," Cuffe said.

"David has been a long time pioneer in philanthropy in this country. He championed the creation of Prescribed Private Funds in 2001, and has maintained his involvement in the sector ever since."

APS recently established its 1000th private ancillary fund (PAF), a type of philanthropic trust previously known as prescribed private funds.

"The continued success of private ancillary funds is crucial to engage the next generation of philanthropists," Cuffe said.

In 2010, the most recent data available, PAFs distributed almost $200 million to the community across welfare, education, culture research and other sectors.

At 30 June, 2010, PAFs held $2.3 billion in funds.
