State Street Global Advisors has hired former GSAM national accounts manager to lead its wholesale business expansion.

Investment Management business State Street Global Advisors (SSgA) has appointed Amy Johnston as vice president of wholesale sales.

Johnston joins SSgA from Goldman Sachs Asset Management where she was national accounts manager.

In her new job, she will lead SSgA's efforts in the wholesale distribution channel as part of an expansion of the company's institutional client offering.

SSgA intends to target family offices, platforms, private banks, researchers, dealer groups and independent advisers.

"Initially, we plan to communicate with an array of research houses and then look deeper into the details of their involvement in the industry," Johnston told InvestorDaily.

She will also be charged with the responsibility of determining the service offering for Australia's self-managed superannuation fund (SMSF) sector through both advised and non-advised channels.

"We ultimately plan to partner with clients of SMSF channels and then observe how they interact with the SMSF market," she said.

"We are obviously not financial planners ourselves, so will therefore work alongside them and gain advice from these channels."

SSgA head of business development for Australian and New Zealand Peter Mitchell said Johnston's experience will enable her to "appropriately adapt SSgA's institutional offering for the wholesale advice channel".

The wholesale channel will leverage a dedicated team of almost 60 investment strategists, four of which will be based in Sydney, as well as portfolio managers within SSgA's investment Solutions Group.

The group helps clients develop investment frameworks and policies, as well as advises how to most appropriately implement SSgA investment solutions.
