Morgan Stanley Smith Barney appoints former Commsec managing director Matthew Comyn as its new chief executive.

Global financial services firm Morgan Stanley Smith Barney has appointed Matthew Comyn as chief executive of its Australian wealth management business.

Set to begin in the role in the final week of February, Comyn brings with him extensive experience and expertise, including that from his most recent role as managing director of Commonwealth Securities (Commsec).

He replaces Tom Burns, who will continue to work with the group in the United States.

"We are delighted that Matt is joining us to lead the continued development and growth of Morgan Stanley Smith Barney in Australia," Morgan Stanley Australia chief executive Steve Harker said.

Morgan Stanley assumed management control of Morgan Stanley Smith Barney in June of last year and is undertaking a comprehensive development plan for the business in Australia, a statement said.

This plan has also resulted in a significant number of financial advisers joining the firm, the group reported.
