Vanguard Australia has announced the appointment of John Oberlies to the role of chief financial officer (CFO).

Mr Oberlies originally joined Vanguard in 2014 and has worked as finance director supporting HR, office of the general counsel, enterprise and currently financial adviser services.

He has almost 15 years of financial planning and analysis experience at companies including Energy Plus and Procura Management and holds a bachelor’s degree from Fordham University in the Bronx, New York, and an MBA from Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia.

To take up the role of CFO, Mr Oberlies will relocate from Vanguard’s office Malvern, Pennsylvania and join the Australian executive team based in Melbourne.

“John’s extensive finance expertise will be a great addition to Vanguard Australia as we continue to grow our market share in both the retail and intermediary businesses,” said Vanguard Australia managing director, Daniel Shrimski.

“We look forward to welcoming him to Vanguard Australia.”

Mr Oberlies will succeed Johanna Platt, who has decided to depart Vanguard to explore other opportunities after more than five years as CFO. The transition is expected to be completed by January next year.

“Johanna has been instrumental in driving business transformation and leading change, providing expert advice, and leading the Finance team during large periods of growth within the business,” said Mr Shrimski.

“I want to thank Johanna for all that she has done for Vanguard’s Australian business and wish her every success as she looks towards her next career challenge.”

Vanguard had $10.5 trillion in assets under management globally as of 30 September, including $2.8 trillion in ETFs. The firm recently announced an expansion to its ESG product range with the launch of the Vanguard Active Positive Impact Fund.
