Australian investors increase ETF trading in October, with demand split evenly between domestic and global equity exposures, AUSIEX has reported.

Australian demand for exchange traded funds (ETFs) has remained strong in October, with investors favouring an even mix of global and local stock indices, according to data from wholesale trading platform AUSIEX.

“The most bought ETF by all investors last month was the Vanguard Australian Shares Index ETF,” said Chris Hill, national manager of strategic relationships at AUSIEX.

“An ETF that tracks Australian high yield stocks and two that track the S&P/ASX 200 were also popular among local investors.”

“An Australian gold miner ETF rounded out the 10 most bought ETFs during the month.”

Hill noted that “in terms of overseas share tracking ETFs, global indices were the most favoured by local investors, followed by ETFs that track the US’s S&P500 and Nasdaq indices.”

“When it comes to advisers and advised investors there was a wider mix of stock sectors among their purchases, including some fixed income and infrastructure through the VanEck Australian Subordinated Debt ETF, the Betashares Australian Quality ETF, Talaria Global Equity Fund Complex ETF, VanEck S&P/ASX MidCap ETF, the VanEck Australian Equal Weight ETF and the VanEck FTSE Global Infrastructure (Hedged) ETF,” he added.

He further notes that “advised self-managed super fund (SMSF) investors also favoured international shares, with their top ETF buys including the Vanguard MSCI Index International Shares and iShares Global 100 AUD ETFs.”

According to AUSIEX, the main ETF providers were Vanguard, iShares, Betashares and VanEck.

Most bought ETFs in October:

1. Vanguard Australian Shares Index ETF
2. iShares S&P500 AUD ETF
3. Betashares Nasdaq 100 ETF
4. Vanguard MSCI Index International Shares ETF
5. Vanguard Australian Shares High Yield ETF
6. iShares Core S&P/ASX 200 ETF
7. VanEck MSCI International Quality ETF
8. VanEck Gold Miners AUD ETF
9. iShares Global 100 AUD ETF
10. Betashares Australia 200 ETF

The most sold ETFs included the Vanguard Australian Property Securities Index ETF, the Betashares Australian High Interest Cash ETF and the Vanguard US Total Market Shares Index AUD ETF.

AUSIEX, which accounts for around one-third of Australia’s wholesale trading market, based its analysis on a large sample of trading data from its client base.
