The deputy chief executive of the Actuaries Institute, Elayne Grace, has been promoted to chief executive.

Elayne Grace moves into the new role after four years as deputy chief executive and head of public policy, where she developed and implemented public policy strategy and managed research programs for the institute.

She replaces former chief executive David Bell, who resigned in late 2017.

She also brings over two decades’ experience across different countries working with consulting firms and insurers with a particular focus on risk identification, assessment and management, according to a statement.

Her former roles include executive director, risk advisory at Ernst & Young, sustainability research manager at IAG and strategic actuarial consultant.

“Elayne has extensive experience in public policy and has been instrumental in raising the Institute’s profile with the development of strategic papers which go to the heart of major economic and social themes that affect the lives of all Australians,” said Actuaries Institute president John Evans.

He added that Ms Grace has played a key role in raising awareness of the institute and the actuarial industry, displayed thought leadership in delivering position papers and drove involvement in a number of inquiries, such as the Financial System Inquiry.

Ms Grace said stepping into the new role was an exciting opportunity for her.

“I am confident that the energy, leadership and strategic ability I bring to the role will not only help build our brand but also reveal to our growing membership base the new opportunities available to them in Australia and overseas,” she said.

“It is also an exciting time to be an actuary in Australia with our profession now increasingly recognised as a source of valuable and strategic advice that helps governments, regulators and companies plan for the future.”

Ms Grace has already commenced in her new position.
