Boutique equities manager GQG Partners has nabbed a senior staff member from MLC, to fill its newly created role of compliance officer.

Alison Smith has commenced in the role, following three years with MLC as compliance manager for its asset management division.

Her appointment has followed two others at GQG, with Colm Moynihan joining as associate director of fund operations (Australia) and Margaret Connolly as RFP writer.

Both roles are also newly formed, bringing the GQG team in Australia and New Zealand to eight.

Previous to MLC, Ms Smith was also a principal at BlackWatch Partners, a risk and compliance services provider, and she held compliance and risk management roles at a number of financial services institutions, including Colonial First State and Pacific Current Group.

GQG Partners managing director of Australia and New Zealand, Laird Abernethy, commented the creation of a dedicated compliance role reflects the firm’s commitment to the Australian market and the regulatory requirements.

“The continuing growth at GQG Partners, as well as the increased regulatory expectations, means that adding a dedicated compliance role at this time is an appropriate step. Alison is a high-quality professional and brings specific compliance and risk management expertise and experience to the company,” Mr Abernety said.

“In addition, the appointments of Maggie and Colm will ensure we have the resources and skills to continue meeting the needs of our clients and investors.”

The new associate director of fund operations, Mr Moynihan, has joined GQG from PIMCO Investment Management, where he was financial reporting and tax manager.

He has a reported 20 years’ experience, having started his career in Ireland, before moving to Australia and joining Colonial First State Global Asset Management in 2014.

Meanwhile, the new RFP writer, Ms Connolly, was most recently with Aberdeen Standard Investments for seven years and also has 14 years’ experience in the technology industry.
