AMP Capital has named former secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade Peter Varghese as the newest member of the company’s board of directors, effective from 17 October 2016.

Mr Varghese has close to four decades of experience in the public sector, holding a number of senior positions including high commissioner to India and director-general of the office of national assessments.

AMP Capital Holdings board chair Vanessa Wallace noted that Mr Varghese’s experience across Asia would also be of great value to the business.

“Peter’s deep knowledge and broad set of skills will be a valuable addition to the AMP Capital Holdings board as the business continues to expand internationally,” she commented.

“His experience in Japan and China is particularly relevant as we enhance AMP Capital’s strategic partnerships with MUTB and China Life and establish a greater presence in Asia.”

In addition to his previous roles, Mr Varghese currently serves as the chancellor of the University of Queensland and was made an officer of the Order of Australia in 2010 for his service to the public sector.
