Anthony Albanese, having recently become leader of the Opposition, announced his new cabinet team which included a mix of experience MPs and newcomers.

Queensland MP Dr Jim Chalmers has been appointed to the shadow treasurer role, having first been elected to the house in 2013.

Mr Albanese said his new ministry included MPs and Senators from all over Australia and was a true reflection of the country.

“My shadow ministry includes members from all parts of the nation. It reflects society, with half men and half women including the shadow cabinet secretary.

“I am confident my team will be more than a match for the Morrison government’s frontbench,” said Mr Albanese.

The minister for Rankin Dr Chalmers was initially suspected to be a contender for the main role as leader of the Labor party having gathered support among Labor’s right faction.

Dr Chalmers has had experience in finance having sat on the house of representatives standing committee of economics for two years and most recently was serving as shadow minister for finance.

Fittingly, given Labor’s election policies Dr Chalmers was also previously the shadow minister for financial services and superannuation.

Dr Chalmers will be joined by Senator Katy Gallagher who takes on the position of shadow minister for finance and the MP for Whitlam Stephen Jones who will take on the role of shadow assistant treasurer and shadow minister for financial services.

Mr Jones will be joined by the MP for Kingsford Smith Matt Thistlethwaite who will take on the role of shadow assistant minister for financial services.

MP for Fenner Dr Andrew Leigh will return to the treasury in the role of shadow assistant minister for Treasury, having previously held the role of shadow assistant treasurer in 2013.

Former shadow treasurer Chris Bowen has changed ministerial portfolios and will be the new shadow minister for health.
