Janus Henderson has welcomed Emma Lawson as fixed interest strategist, macroeconomics, which the fund manager said would support the phased retirement of fellow strategist, Frank Uhlenbruch.

Within her role, Ms Lawson will add to the investment strategy across all portfolios, in addition to achieving performance objectives through relevant research and contributions to the generation of active interest rate strategies.

She brings over 25 years of experience in financial markets strategy to the role, across investment management, investment banking, and government sector. Namely, Ms Lawson joined Janus Henderson from Treasury Corporation of Victoria, where she provided analysis on the global and Australian economy to clients.

Prior to this, Ms Lawson had held macroeconomist and strategist roles at the National Australia Bank, Morgan Stanley, and Merrill Lynch. Moreover, she has a masters in economics from the University of Adelaide.

Janus Henderson head of Australia, Matt Gaden, said that “Emma’s appointment and smooth transition will ensure that clients and their investment outcomes driven by a longstanding repeatable process that has been in place for over two decades will be seamless.”

As such, Ms Lawson joins the fixed interest team led by Jay Sivapalan, who has been with the firm for 22 years managing in excess of $18 billion on behalf of its clients.

Commenting on the appointment, Mr Sivapalan explained: “Emma’s hire was a result of a thoughtful, patient, and extensive search. Every member of the Australian fixed interest team was involved in her appointment and reached a unanimous agreement on her selection.”

“We are delighted to welcome such a well-established, seasoned, and high calibre economist. I know every member of our team is looking forward to working with her to deliver exceptional investment outcomes for our clients.”

As such, strategist Frank Uhlenbruch is due to retire in the second half of 2023 after a career spanning over 39 years in the funds management industry, with 28 of those being at Janus Henderson.

Mr Sivapalan added that Mr Uhlenbruch will be with the fixed income team for some time in order to ensure a smooth transition and said it has been a “real privilege” to work alongside him.

“His experience and friendship will be missed. We look forward to keeping in close contact with him as he embarks on the next chapter and wish him well for the future,” he concluded.
