Leading the new division is Sean Anthonisz, who will join as investment risk portfolio manager and report to the head of investment strategy, Michael Winchester. The team has also welcomed Wei-Ting Pan as an investment analyst.

Both will join Aware in early July, having most recently worked together at Mine Super.

Speaking on the new division, Mr Winchester said: “The establishment of the investment risk team as a centre of excellence for quantitative research will help extend our frameworks for making cross-asset-class allocation decisions in the best interests of our 1.1 million members.”

Mr Winchester added that he was thrilled to expand the investment strategy team as it supports the fund’s growth ambitions, which include a projected funds under management of $250 billion by 2026 and the establishment of overseas offices.

“It is yet another example of how the creation of a world-class investment team will help drive Aware Super’s growth story to become a top-five performing super fund and global institutional investor operating at scale,” he commented.

Two new hires to Aware’s macro strategy team were also announced by the fund.

Specifically, Christopher Ellis is joining in early June as senior portfolio manager, macro strategy, and Nathan Peters has been appointed senior investment analyst.

Mr Ellis brings a 16-year track record managing alpha strategies and a 25-year career in financial markets to the role, most recently serving as a portfolio manager at Singapore-based hedge fund Rhicon, and prior to that, he spent 10 years at Macquarie Investment Management.

Moreover, Mr Peters joins the macro strategies team with a specific focus on working with Aware Super’s partnership program of external investment managers, wherein $2 billion is allocated to global macro and multi-asset managers who deliver diversifying return streams to the fund as well as support Aware’s internal asset allocation teams’ research and capability development.

Mr Peters joins with 20 years of experience in investment and manager research covering the global hedge fund landscape, most recently with Fulcrum Asset Management in London.

In welcoming the pair, Mr Winchester said the macro strategies team of seven investment professionals would benefit from their expertise and manage the fund’s approach to active asset allocation.
