Dr Palmer will work with the company’s ethical advisers CAER and the investment team to “further develop the company’s ethical investment frameworks, which govern the way Australian Ethical interprets its Ethical Charter”, according to a statement by the firm.
He will also manage Australian Ethical’s corporate advocacy, which involves encouraging companies to “improve their ethical behaviour across a number of issues, including human rights and climate change”, said the statement.
Dr Palmer recently worked for St James Ethics Centre, where he headed up ‘The Practice’, which delivers business consulting services, leadership and learning programs.
“This includes advising companies on the implementation of ethical frameworks to motivate and guide their people and support reasoned, consistent and objective decision making,” said Australian Ethical.
Dr Palmer has also worked in law, finance and investment – including as a partner at law firm Middletons Moore & Bevins, and head of asset securitisation at ABN AMRO Australia.
He also received a doctoral degree in philosophy from the University of Sydney.
Australian Ethical managing director Phil Vernon said Dr Palmer’s appointment would strengthen the firm’s reputation as “the leader in ethical investment in Australia”.
“His skills and experience will be invaluable in navigating the complex issues that arise, ensuring that our corporate and investment decision making remain true to our Ethical Charter, serving all of our stakeholders including shareholders, superannuation fund members, investors and the community at large,” said Mr Vernon.
