Mark Hand, who has been with ANZ since 1988, has been appointed to the role.
Mr Hand will be responsible not just for growing ANZ’s corporate and commercial business in Australia but also aligning ANZ’s retail and commercial businesses, an ANZ statement said.
ANZ’s chief executive for Australia, Mark Whelan, said: “I’ve worked closely with Mark for many years and I’m confident he is the right person to help us continue our journey in building the leading corporate and commercial bank in Australia.
“It’s pleasing to appoint somebody with Mark’s extensive retail and commercial banking experience to help our customers grow their businesses, either here in Australia or by expanding into other markets across the Asia Pacific region.”
Paul Presland will replace Mr Hand as acting managing director of retail distribution until a permanent replacement is found, according to the statement.
