HSBC Bank Australia has added a new independent non-executive director to its board.

Effective from 1 March 2023, the bank appointed experienced board member and professor Karina Kwan as independent non-executive director.

Ms Kwan is an adjunct professor at the University of Sydney Business School, Discipline of Finance, and currently serves on the board of Newcastle Permanent Building Society as well as WAM Active as a non-executive director.

She has previous board experience in the financial services, technology and not-for-profit sectors with Nulis Nominees, Kyckr and Learning Links.

Grant King, HSBC Bank Australia chairman, said: “Karina’s background is a good mix of Board [sic] and executive experience that covers both financial services and technology sectors. Her insights will be an asset to the board as we continue on our path to become the leading international bank in Australia.”

HSBC Bank Australia chief executive Antony Shaw said: “The board is looking forward to working with Karina and drawing on her experience and insights.”

Ms Kwan joins Mr King, Mr Shaw, Gail Pemberton, Geoff Wilson, Jann Skinner, Kenneth Ng and Philip Fellowes on the board.

The appointment comes after Mr Shaw took on the role of CEO and executive director in September 2022 following the departure of Kaber Mclean.
