The active Australian equity manager said that the promotions have bolstered its portfolio management capabilities.

Martin Currie Australia has promoted senior analyst Matthew Davison and quantitative analyst Sam Li to the new roles of portfolio managers.

Mr Davison joined Martin Currie in 2013 after previously working at Merrill Lynch for nine years as lead banking analyst, at Citigroup Smith Barney for two years as an equity research analyst in the financials team, and at NAB for three and half years in its M&A division.

Since joining the firm, Martin Currie said that Mr Davison has demonstrated fundamental research insight with his financials coverage, portfolio construction, process development involvement and strong communication skills with clients.

“With his understanding of the funds management industry through his financials research coverage, and keen interest in true fundamental insights, Matthew is perfectly placed to evolve the Active Insights strategy,” commented Martin Currie CIO Reece Birtles.

According to Mr Birtles, Mr Li has also made a significant contribution to the development of Martin Currie’s Active Insights strategy since he joined the firm 18 months ago.

He was formerly a quantitative developer at Frontier Advisors, where he was responsible for delivering quantitative solutions externally and internally, and also previously worked at NAB as a quantitative analyst developing statistical models.

Mr Birtles stated that Mr Li’s academic background and work experience provided him with unique expertise to continue to evolve the investment process.

“These promotions tie in with our recently launched Martin Currie Active Insights strategy and both Matthew and Sam bring fundamental and systematic style neutral portfolio construction skills,” he said.

“Both of them have a unique mindset to extract the best fundamental insights from the broader team, deliver alpha, and communicate their edge to clients, consultants and broader investor group.”

Martin Currie currently manages over $31 billion in assets under management and $8 billion in Australian equities. Mr Birtles noted that the firm’s 18-member investment team has an average tenure of 12 years and average industry experience of 20 years.
