The Future Fund has appointed a new chief investment officer, filling the vacancy created by David Neal’s promotion to managing director in June.

Dr Raphael Arndt will have overall responsibility for leading the investment team in developing research, due diligence and selection, and monitoring processes for assets and investment managers.

Future Fund also said its current head of investment strategy, Stephen Gilmore, will take on additional responsibilities, including managing and monitoring total portfolio risk settings and continuing to focus on assessing the macroeconomic environment.

Future Fund managing director David Neal, who was appointed earlier this year, said these arrangements will enhance the business' ability to interpret the broad investment environment and “exploit” specific insights from each asset class.

“With 20 years’ experience in researching and making investments, as well as building investment teams and institutional portfolios, [Dr Arndt] has the commercial and leadership skills to help us refine our investment thinking and processes,” Mr Neal said.

“Mr Gilmore and his team will continue to drive our understanding of the environment and our ability to position the portfolio appropriately for its mandate,” he said.

Before starting in his new role as chief investment officer, Dr Arndt was Future Fund head of infrastructure and timberlands, which he started in 2008.

Dr Arndt’s previous roles include infrastructure and timberlands investment roles with Hastings Funds Management and a policy role with the Australian Council for Infrastructure Development.
