Former Australian Workers Union national secretary Paul Howes has joined KPMG Australia.

Mr Howes has been appointed as a director of KPMG's advisory practice and will consult with clients in the areas of business transformation, transaction services and superannuation.

During his 10-year period with the union, Mr Howes was responsible for its financial and organisational management and he also reformed its corporate governance practices and successfully executed a major restructuring program.

He has also served as vice president of the Australian Council of Trade Unions, deputy chair of Australian Super and as a director on multiple Commonwealth government boards.

Mr Howes will retain his directorship with not-for-profit group beyondblue, but has resigned all other previously held directorships and offices.

KMPG head of advisory John Somerville said Mr Howes will present KPMG’s clients with unique insights on “motivating workforces to drive productivity and ultimately improve business performance”.

“As the transaction market heats up and margins for error are thin, specialist consideration of people and workplace issues are critical for successful integrations – Paul can add great value here,” said Mr Somerville.

“Paul will also provide insights to the rapidly growing and changing superannuation sector, drawing from his experience as a director and deputy chair of Australia’s largest industry super fund.”
