UniSuper has appointed three new members to their investment leadership team.

Penny Heard has been appointed head of Australian equities, Thomas Tam head of global strategies and quant methods, while Sandra Lee has been named head of private markets.

All three employees come from within UniSuper’s in-house investment team, as the fund builds on its earlier commitment to build distinguished investment talent and demonstrate leadership diversity.

These appointments have brought the investment leadership team to seven.

UniSuper explained that due to the rapid growth of its property, infrastructure and private equity investments, it has taken the decision to divide these portfolios under two dedicated senior leaders to best deliver enhanced investment outcomes.

As such, Ms Lee will be responsible for infrastructure and private equity strategies, while Kent Robbins will remain leading the fund’s property strategy.

Commenting on the appointments, UniSuper’s chief investment officer, John Pearce, said "the skills, experiences and perspectives that our leadership team bring to their roles will provide real value to UniSuper’s members”.

“UniSuper is proud to showcase leadership diversity for the diverse members we serve.”

He noted that UniSuper’s investment capabilities will continue to drive efficiency for members, maintain low fees and position the fund “to act quickly on opportunities that others don’t see,” now that 70 per cent of their $105 billion assets are managed in-house.

“I look forward to working with our newly constituted leadership team to deliver retirement outcomes worth saving for that don’t cost the Earth,” Mr Pearce concluded.

The appointments commenced on 1 July 2022.
