American Century Investments has appointed Sarah Bratton Hughes as senior vice-president and head of ESG and sustainable investing.

Ms Hughes joins American Century from Schroders, where she previously held the roles of global head of sustainability solutions, head of sustainability for North America, investment director, associate product manager and product executive.

“In hiring Sarah, we have added to our team a talented ESG and sustainable investing leader with a distinguished reputation in the industry,” said American Century senior vice-president and chief investment officer Victor Zhang.

Ms Hughes has worked in the industry since 2007 and held roles at JP Morgan Asset Management and JPMorgan Chase prior to her time at Schroders.

She has authored thought leadership on US sustainability policy and social sustainability topics globally and last year received a Markets Media Women in Finance award for Excellence in Sustainability.

“Over the past five years, we have made tremendous progress in our environmental, social and governance (ESG) efforts, building a solid foundation, deepening our ESG knowledge and developing innovative tools and resources,” said Mr Zhang.

“As we look ahead, we want to accelerate our sustainable investing efforts and believe Sarah will help take us to that next level.”

Commenting on Ms Hughes’ appointment, American Century president and CEO Jonathan Thomas said that sustainability was a key component of the business.

“As a firm that has directed over 40 per cent of our earnings to more than 20 years of medical research to cure cancer and other gene-based diseases, we attract clients and employees who are inspired to make a difference through their investments, and Sarah will play an important role in advancing our ESG and sustainable investing practices,” he said.
