UBS chief economist for Australia and New Zealand, Scott Haslem, has resigned from the investment bank and an internal replacement has been named.

George Tharenou will be taking over the role from Mr Haslem, who will be pursuing opportunities outside sell-side research, UBS said in a statement.

Mr Tharenou has been at UBS since 2006, and has previously worked in the Reserve Bank of Australia and Queensland Treasury.

“Since joining the firm in 1998, Scott has made an invaluable contribution to the business and has led a consistently top-rated Australian Economics team over the past 10 years,” UBS said.

“We would like to thank Scott for his long-term dedication and commitment to UBS, and his direct contribution to our market-leading Australian franchise. Scott’s thought leadership and professionalism will be missed.

“George has been a key contributor to the Australian economics franchise over the past 11 years and is well placed to carry on the team’s success.”
