Michael Thawley, a former secretary of the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, has rejoined Capital Group in a global policy role.

Capital Group Australia has announced the appointment of Michael Thawley as senior vice-president, capital strategy research.

Mr Thawley was most recently secretary of the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet under prime ministers Tony Abbott and Malcolm Turnbull between 2014 and January 2016.

He will be based at Capital Group's headquarters in Los Angeles but will support Capital Group Australia managing director Paul Hennessy in the expansion of the Australian business.

Mr Thawley will also work closely with Capital Group's global investment team, advising on "potential investment impacts that stem from international political and policy developments", the firm said.

Previously, he served on the investment committees of Capital World Investors and Capital Research Global Investors.

Commenting on the appointment, Mr Hennessy said Mr Thawley will bring a truly global policy perspective to Capital Group.

"Integrating political and policy analysis into research is as vital as ever for our clients if you are to successfully navigate the investment opportunities and challenges around the world. Brexit was a stark example of this," Mr Hennessy said.

"With his previous experience at Capital Group, Michael brings a good understanding of the operational dimensions of the company's funds management business.

"His support will be invaluable as we progressively introduce a more diverse range of global investment strategies to help Australian investors reach their retirement savings goals," he said.
