Asset management firm Legg Mason has announced the appointment of Andy Sowerby as its new head of Australia, effective from 8 August 2016.

Mr Sowerby comes to the firm from Martin Currie, a Legg Mason affiliate, where he held the title of executive director for sales, marketing and client services for 11 years. He has relocated from Edinburgh to Melbourne.

“Having spent the past decade building a global business, I have always been impressed with the level of innovation in the Australian marketplace alongside the high quality of the investment professionals I have had the pleasure to meet,” Mr Sowerby said.

Commenting on the appointment, Legg Mason head of global distribution Terry Johnson said Mr Sowerby brought over two and a half decades of experience, and would serve the company’s clients well.

“We are delighted that Andy has taken on this expanded role for Legg Mason; he is a proven leader, who was a critical part of building Martin Currie’s business,” he said.

Mr Sowerby added that he “looked forward” to working with Legg Mason’s Australian team and local investment affiliates.

“I am excited about my new role as I believe Legg Mason has an increasingly important role to play for investors, in that we are one of the few multi-affiliate models that has the depth and capability to build and deliver a range of solutions tailored to the Australian investor,” he said.
