Industry super fund Energy Super has appointed its first independent director.

Brisbane-based lawyer Christine Maher – who has 25 years’ legal experience in the superannuation industry – will join the fund’s board of directors.

Energy Super chairman Mark Williams said Ms Maher’s legal background will “complement the skills and expertise of the board”.

“Christine’s experience, particularly in business strategy, governance, product development, investment and compliance, will ensure Energy Super continues to put members’ interests first,” Mr Williams said.

“As Energy Super’s first independent director, Christine will also provide an additional and valuable perspective to supplement those provided by our employer and member representative directors.

“In this way, the Energy Super board will be able to continually look forward to properly identify, review and respond to emerging issues and opportunities,” he said.

Ms Maher has held directorships with Suncorp Insurance and Finance and WorkCover Queensland.
