A Westscheme director has been appointed to the AustralianSuper trustee board.

AustralianSuper has appointed a new member to its trustee board.

Simone McGurk joins the board as a director, replacing Cath Bowtell, who is ending her five-year involvement on the AustralianSuper trustee board through retirement. Bowtell was appointed alternate director in March 2006 and later became a director in 2007.

"We thank Cath Bowtell for her invaluable contribution to the AustralianSuper board and wish her well in her future endeavours," AustralianSuper chair Elana Rubin said.

McGurk becomes the first Western Australia-based trustee board director of AustralianSuper. She is currently a director of the Westscheme superannuation fund, the entity soon to be merged with AustralianSuper, as well as a member of the Australian Council of Trade Unions executive, the UnionsWA secretary, and a Western Australia State Training Board member.

"Simone McGurk is an outstanding appointment for AustralianSuper. She has a long history of member advocacy through her 20 years in the union movement," Rubin said.

"She has a strong insight into the issues facing Australian workers and an affinity with the 'members first' philosophy of AustralianSuper.

"Simone's appointment ensures the interests of West Australian members will be well represented and demonstrates AustralianSuper's commitment to the successful finalisation of the merger."

The 13-person trustee board is now made up of seven New South Wales representatives, five Victorian representatives and one WA representative.
