Independent member for Parliament (MP) Rob Oakeshott will meet with the Financial Service and Superannuation Minister the week of October 31.

Oakeshott will meet with Bill Shorten when Parliament resumes and debate the Future of Financial Advice (FOFA) reforms, a spokeswoman for Oakeshott told InvestorDaily.

“He is meeting with Bill Shorten and they’ll be talking about the FOFA changes,” she said.

Last week, independent MP Bob Katter was scheduled to meet with Shorten, but the meeting was cancelled due to the demands of other legislative issues, a spokeswoman for Katter said.

Independent MPs are back in the spotlight after Shorten read his the first tranche of the FOFA draft laws in Parliament.
The government needs the support of the independents to get the legislation over the line.

The opt-in component of the reforms, which would require clients to sign fresh agreements with their advisers every two years, has been one of the most contentious aspects of the proposal.

Ministers have been playing their cards close to their chests but may show their hands when legislators begin debating the draft laws in Parliament in two weeks.

Meanwhile, a spokesman for Shorten’s office said FOFA was on track to be finalised early next year.

“The government expects to finalise the legislation with the timetable we’ve previously announced,” he said.
