Insurance companies and professionals have been recognised at an annual industry awards ceremony.

CommInsure was crowned Life Insurance Company of the Year at the annual Australian and New Zealand Insurance Industry Awards hosted last night in Sydney.

Now in its seventh year, the awards, co-hosted by the Australian and New Zealand Institute of Insurance and Finance (ANZIIF), recognise outstanding achievement in the Australian and New Zealand insurance marketplace.

Other winners included: Insurance Leader of the Year: Chartis chief executive Chris Townsend; Risk Team of the Year: Westfield Group; Underwriting Agency of the Year: Sportscover; and General Insurance Company of the Year: QBE.

LMI Group took out Innovation of the Year; Marsh took out Large Broker of the Year; while HWL Ebsworth Lawyers took out Law Firm/Practitioner of the Year.

Loss Adjuster of the Year went to Crawford & Company; Reinsurance Company of the Year went to RGA; Service Provider to the Insurance Industry went to Recoveries Corporation Group; while Services to the Community went to AMI Insurance.

Australian Reliance took out Small - Medium Broker of the Year and the Treasurer's Award for Good Governance and Practice went to Zurich

ANZIIF chief executive Joan Fitzpatrick said the winners announced were a standard bearer for the industry's professionalism and it was their responsibility to actively promote the valuable contribution of the insurance industry to the community.

Each award category was reviewed by a distinguished panel of 14 Australian, New Zealand and international judges to determine the winners, and independently audited by Ernst & Young.

In February this year, CommInsure was also the recipient of the Platinum Life Company Award at the Association of Financial Advisers/Plan for Life 2009 Life Company of the Year Awards.
