Auscoal Super's chief has taken out the fund executive of the year award.

Auscoal Super chief executive Bruce Watson has been named the executive of the year by the Fund Executive Association (FEAL).

The award is presented in partnership with AMP Capital Investors. As part of the award, Watson will receive a $20,000 education grant.

Watson was selected for demonstrating innovative and outstanding leadership in responding to the needs of the fund and its members during a challenging year, according to a statement from AMP Capital.

In his job as chief executive, Watson has demonstrated outstanding leadership, member focus and innovation that has seen Auscoal Super grow from a small yet focused super fund into a strategically aligned, high-performing organisation, Auscoal Super chair Arthur Weston said.

"Over the last five years Bruce has demonstrated inclusive, yet decisive, leadership," Weston said.

"He has devoted his time to a number of important strategic issues, identified significant growth opportunities and achieved breakthrough results by constantly searching for new and better ways to understand and meet the needs of Auscoal Super members and employers."

Watson said he was extremely honoured to be considered for this award.

Auscoal Super and Maritime Super are currently in merger talks.
