ANZ has promoted from within to fill the bank's global commercial banking role.

Current managing director of commercial banking for Australia, Mark Whelan, will have his responsibilities broadened to global level.

A spokesperson for ANZ told InvestorDaily Mr Whelan would take over his new responsibilities from ANZ New Zealand chief executive David Hisco.

In his new role, Mr Whelan will be accountable for the global commercial segment, including longer term growth strategy, and improving "connectivity for commercial clients", according to an ANZ statement.

Mr Whelan will also be responsible for talent management and succession planning, and accelerating progress in areas such as common systems infrastructure and digital development, said ANZ.

ANZ chief executive Mike Smith said that as trade and investment flowing into the Asia Pacific region continues to grow, there is a “significant expansion” of medium-sized corporates doing business with and within Asia.

“This continues to be an important growth opportunity for ANZ and coordination of the segment fits well with Mark’s existing responsibility for commercial Australia, our largest commercial client franchise,” Mr Smith said.

Prior to his appointment, Mr Whelan was the managing director of ANZ’s institutional, commercial and private banking businesses in the Asia-Pacific, Europe and the US.

Before starting with ANZ in 2004, Mr Whelan worked for Westpac and Citibank in senior commercial banking positions.
