Super assets hit $1.85 trillion

The superannuation industry increased its assets by 15.3 per cent in the 12 months to June 2014 to reach $1.85 trillion, according to new statistics from APRA.

The APRA Quarterly Superannuation Performance report, which is based on entities with at least $50 million in assets, found that total superannuation assets increased by 2.6 per cent over the June 2014 quarter.

There were $27.6 billion in superannuation contributions in the June quarter, up 5.9 per cent from the June 2013 quarter. Total contributions for the year ending June 2014 were $95 billion.

Outward rollovers exceeded inward rollovers by $531 million in the June quarter, and there were $14.7 billion in total benefit payments for the quarter (up 8.3 per cent from the prior corresponding period).

Net contribution flows totalled $12.4 billion for the quarter, up 15.1 per cent from the June 2013 quarter. Net contribution flows for the year ending June 2014 were $37.3 billion.

When it comes to financial performance, the annual industry-wide rate of return for the year ending 30 June 2014 was 11.6 per cent.
