Super assets hit $1.75 trillion

Superannuation assets increased by 17.2 per cent in the past 12 months, bringing total assets to $1.75 trillion. 

APRA’s Quarterly Superannuation Performance report showed a 5.7 per cent increase in superannuation assets over the September quarter, after adjusting for changes in reporting requirements.

Contributions totalled $21.5 billion over this period for superannuation entities, with $50 million or more in assets. 

Contributions for the year ending September 2013 were $90.3 billion, down 0.8 per cent from the same period last year.

There was a 6.1 per cent increase in total assets in the September quarter for entities with over $50 million in assets.

Outward rollovers exceeded inward rollovers by $719 million.

The total amount of benefit payouts for the year ending September 2013 was $51.7 billion, an increase of 6.4 per cent from the previous year. 

Net contribution flows were $7.4 billion in the September quarter and $32.6 billion for the year ending September 2013, down 7.3 per cent from 2012. 

The industry rate of return for entities with over $50 million in assets for the year ending September 2013 was 14.6 per cent. 

The rate of return for the quarter was 4.7 per cent.
